The Rebels wrestling team, led by coach Josh Snider, headed south to face the Bobcats and Raiders of Gilmer and Southeast Whitfield counties. It was the second time Snider would return to his alma mater to face his father, Gilmer head coach Sam Snider.Little did they know it would be the same night that Gilmer would receive news that they had been named “Team of the Week” by national magazine Amateur Wrestling News that covers high school wrestling across the entire United States.

AWN took notice of the Bobcats performance in Norman Lake, NC last week with this report: “Gilmer was crowned Champions at the Norman Lake Duals in North Carolina this past weekend. In the pool bracket they defeated Fort Dorchester (S.C.) 60-15, Jack Britt, (S.C.) 55-14 and Lake Norman (N.C.) 48-23. Gilmer then moved on to face 13th ranked Christiansburg (Va.) in the championship dual and posted an impressive 46-25 win over the Blue Demons.”

Gilmer HS Administrator and long-time assistant coach, David Henson commented on the announcement saying, “This is a big step for us. We’ve received a lot of state awards, but this is the first time the team has had national recognition.”

Gilmer’s Sam Snider said, “It was an exciting night and good to see my son. We did a good job. We matched them up well.” About the Rebels, he said, “His kids are getting better every time and I hope he is encouraged. The big news is his wife is going to have a baby, inducing labor on Thursday, and I’m going to be a grandpa!”

Regarding the national recognition, Sam Snider said, “We didn’t see that coming. Of all the high school teams in the country, they noticed us.”

Scores for Tuesday night’s duals matches in Gilmer: Fannin 9 – Gilmer 66, and Fannin 13 – Southeast Whitfield 66.
