Fannin High’s boys’ and girls’ teams split their games with their counterparts from Gilmer on the second day of the ETC Tipoff Tournament on Tuesday, as the Lady Rebels conquered the Lady Cats by eleven and the Rebels fell to the Bobcats by ten.The matchup between the Lady Rebels and the Lady Cats saw very little scoring in the first quarter, as six points by Fannin was enough to give them a three-point lead going into the second quarter.
Scoring remained to be limited thanks to great defensive play by both teams, leading to the Lady Rebels leading 14-8 at halftime.
The deciding factor of the game would come in the third quarter, a period in which Fannin would catch fire and outscore Gilmer 10-5. Now with an eleven point lead, the Lady Rebels would match the Lady Cats’ point for point for the rest of the game, leading to a 38-27 victory for Fannin.
Hope Cochran led the Lady Cats in scoring and rebounding with fifteen points and twelve rebounds in the win. Right behind Cochran was teammate Molly Chandler, who had eleven points and seven rebounds.
As if the girls’ game wasn’t exciting enough, the boys’ game that soon followed would be even more intense. The Rebels and Bobcats fought hard through all four quarters, but difficulties in scoring for the Rebels in the fourth quarter—just six points—allowed the Bobcats to run away with the game.
The Bobcats would win the game with the final score of 50-40.
Jonathan Vecchio led the Rebels in scoring and rebounding with sixteen points and nine rebounds in the close defeat. Directly behind Vecchio in scoring and rebounding was Will Patterson, who recorded seven points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Rebels and Rebels finish day three of the Tipoff Tournament with games against Copper Basin. The girls’ game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. with the boys’ game following soon after.
